The state of Iowa is a diverse region, providing unique angling opportunities across the state. Fish, on the other hand, have gills which help them breathe oxygen directly from water without any need to surface. They counter this sinking tendency by constantly swimming - a bit like how an airplane stays aloft by getting dynamic lift by moving through air. They have been known to bite horses that are in the water getting a drink.

For example, if we are going all the way to South Africa to dive the Sardine Run, lets chase bait balls every morning (like all the other boats) but when everyone else has called it a day, lets explore the reefs of the Wild Coast and see how many catshark species we can chum up.

Females mature even later, between 14 and 16 years of age. It can be separated from most others of this flattened and plated group by the presence of a tail fin and two dorsal fins. Sharks with whisker-like feelers (barbells) use them to taste and feel their way to food.

If you cut or injure yourself... get out! Do not stay in the water with blood around you. Martin O’Connel, of UNO’s Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences, yielded 18 bull sharks between 2000-2003, all taken off Goose Point near the mouth of Bayou LaCombe. This national fishery is likely to be the largest single direct threat to Whale Shark recovery in the Indo-Pacific. Many shark populations are threatened by human activities.

Frequently, the nursery areas are in highly productive coastal or estuarine waters where abundant small fish and crustaceans provide food for the growing pups. Because deepwater sharks don't reproduce rapidly, they have a harder time bouncing back from overfishing, White said. "So personally, I have a preference not to eat these animals." A larger specimen was reported from the Gulf of Siam and estimated at 18 m (59 ft), a questioned figure. I have chosen to speak on the more exotic, but rare, injuries from interactions with marine life.

Julia Spaet, a researcher at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, says that “the resources dedicated by a fleet of fishermen will always outmatch any scientific efforts to assess abundances. The angel shark’s body is flat and wide, with large fins extending out on either side and large eyes positioned atop the head rather than on its sides, giving a wide field of view. Several larger species can be dangerous to humans. Blue sharks are known to be adept swimmers and can travel long distances in just a short amount of time.

They are usually poorly formed, carry a large yolk sac (for nourishment), and are very different in appearance from juvenile and adult specimens. Before we continue, a nod to venerable contenders that aren't on the list: killer whales (there are few confirmed attacks, accept by those in captivity), octopuses (yes, they've been known to attack), sea cucumbers (who'da thunk?) and piranhas (which actually live only in freshwater, and whose deadly attacks on people are pure myth). Therefore, I oxyrinchus may be synonymous with I desori. No minimum size limits apply to these species. In this section of the site you find articles about true sharks (see articles below) and "freshwater sharks".

The blacknose feeds on small fishes but is often preyed upon by larger sharks. The Pacific viperfish has jagged, needlelike teeth so outsized it can't close its mouth. Fish may also have a lateral line system, which detects movement in the water, and a swim bladder, which the fish uses for buoyancy. The slime hardens into a cocoon which prevents the lungfish from drying out. Under strong feeding stimuli, excitement can intensify into a sensory overload that may result in cannibalistic feeding, or “shark frenzy,” in which injured sharks, regardless of size, are devoured.
