In 1917 the Original Dixieland Jass Band cut the first recorded jazz records in history. There was no "fluff", and the exercises at the end of the tutorial helped reinforce the concepts presented. The term "dixieland jazz" had already been employed by another white band, Tom Brown's Dixieland Jass Band, also based in Chicago, and the first white jazz band to tour the north (although not New York). Some of Swing's finest players now would take significance over melodic embellishment.

S. was Cuban trumpeter Mario Bauza, one of the fathers of Latin jazz. Flutist and alto and baritone saxophonist Henry Threadgill led Air with bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Steve McCall in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These definitions were compiled to aid Music Library volunteers when writing their reviews and categorizing/labelling music. I'm not sure a lot of individuals I know would tend to agree with this notion since the terms "fusion" and "contemporary" have been erroneously expanded over the years.
